    Our Guides

The expedition guides on our Kilimanjaro ascents are local Tanzanian guides who originate from the regions surrounding the mountain. They are very experienced guides with multiple ascents of Kilimanjaro (ie 100+ times) and are specifically trained in guiding techniques. Each guide holds guiding certifications, are KINAPA (Kilimanjaro National Parks) certified and hold wilderness medical qualifications. Our group of guides have all been personally selected due to their personal attributes as they are both courteous and caring whilst being good leaders. All trips have a lead guide and an assistant guide, or guides, depending on the final groups size.

    Staff

Each expedition has a cook, waiter, camp manager and a group of porters to carry the loads required for your trip. The cook is trained in ‘Western-style’ cooking and hygiene techniques to ensure your health and well-being during your trek. On top of that, the food we provide is excellent!

The number of porters on your trip is dependent on the size of the group. Adventure Consultants is a supporting member of the Porter Protection Society, a group that oversees the welfare of porters around the world. This ensures the porters are well clothed, fed and accommodated during the expedition.

    Head Office Support Team

Running successful journeys and expeditions is more about experience, knowledge and strategic management than any other factors. As an organisation, we place a substantial amount of time and resources into ensuring our trips are well planned and supported. You can be assured that the AC staff will provide you with friendly advice and knowledgeable support throughout the planning stages of your trip and we will be there to provide backup while the trip is running.

In her role as Expedition Liaison, Kelly will assist with the planning and logistics for your trip, providing useful information, reminders and answering any questions to ensure you arrive well prepared

    Your Health

Expedition members will be provided with pre-trip medical advice and a medical questionnaire and asked to visit their family physician to receive a full medical examination. This information will be sighted only by the expedition leader and our medical adviser and treated with full confidentiality.

    Difficulty Rating

Each of our trips is individually rated according to its physical and technical difficulty, displayed in the icons towards the top of each trip page. You can click on the accompanying question mark for additional descriptions and the full run-down of our grading system is available on our Difficulty Ratings page.

    Preparing for Your Trip

With reduced air pressure at higher altitudes, there is less available oxygen. The result of this is a lower level of performance. Being generally fit and healthy is paramount to doing well at altitude. Training should focus on developing cardiovascular capability. Being overweight places more stress on your system so ensure that you are not putting yourself at a disadvantage before you start.

It is recommended that you focus on cardiovascular training as the cardiovascular system is constantly stressed at altitude whether trekking or at rest. Hill hiking, mountain biking and swimming are beneficial.

During aerobic training it is helpful to monitor your heart rate to ensure you are training your cardiovascular system. This can be achieved by using a heart rate monitor or by manually measuring heart rate during exertion. A basic formula is 220 – Age = Heart Rate (HR) maximum. Operating at 70-85% of your HR max will ensure you are exercising to enhance cardiovascular fitness.

There is no training for trekking like trekking. Sport specific training will ensure your ligaments and tendons are conditioned for the stresses of the expedition so get out, in your trekking boots, as much as possible.

Be careful not to over-train just prior to the trip as you will need all your reserves and you don’t want to ‘peak’ too early. For further professional advice, personalised coaching options and specific training plans designed for trekking and mountaineering see our Fitness Training Programs page, and check out our AC Blog article 'Fit to Trek'.

    What You Carry

While on the mountain you will simply carry your daypack containing water, snacks, camera, jacket, waterproof layers, headlamp and extra warm clothes. You have a baggage allowance of 15kg which will be carried for you by porters. This weight is strictly adhered to, so please ensure that you pack carefully. Your guide will assist with your gear preparation prior to the trek so you can make your final selection on clothing at that stage.

    Food

The food on our Kilimanjaro climbs is exceptionally good. We place emphasis on providing nutritious meals and a good supply of snack food throughout the trip. Please inform us if you have any special dietary requirements.

    Accommodation

Lying in the foothills of Mt Meru, this picturesque country estate combines old-world charm, personalised service and a warm African welcome; hence Rivertrees Country Estate is the favoured property for Adventure Consultants guests prior to/after their Kilimanjaro climb and safari.

Conveniently located 40 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport and halfway to Arusha, the estate is set amongst 10 acres of forest next to the Usa River; giving you peace and quiet away from the hustle of the city hotels and offering a fabulous location from which to base your adventures.

The private cottages are located on the river and have every amenity needed, as well as an outdoor rain shower, river deck and wood burning fireplace. The original farmhouse has four ensuite bedrooms, each with its own entrance as well as access to the common living rooms and is large enough to accommodate 10 people. This is a great for families and groups.

Facilities include massage treatments, river walks, bird watching, Lake Duluti canoeing, a coffee or village tour or simply, relaxing by the pool. We recommend enjoying the gourmet country cuisine using the fresh produce grown in the lodge gardens and served from the popular restaurant.

If you would like to upgrade your hotel before or after your Kilimanjaro Trek, there are several superb properties in the Arusha area. We profile our favourite selection of Hotel Upgrades in our Add-On section above.

    Clothing & Equipment

Adventure Consultants will supply all group gear (e.g. tents, tables and chairs, stoves, utensils etc) whilst expedition members are to provide their own personal clothing, day pack, duffel bag, footwear and sleeping bag. An equipment list will be provided to expedition members upon confirmation of your participation.

We climb Kilimanjaro via the picturesque Shira-Barafu Route, which allows spectacular views of the peak and the surrounding countryside. We ascend through the tree line into a wild volcanic moorland landscape with the high summit dome overhead.

Each night is spent in tents that are set up by our local staff, enjoying wholesome meals served in our dining tent. We depart the Barafu Camp for the summit soon after midnight to allow us time to reach the peak before the afternoon clouds roll in. The routes follows rocky trails to the crater rim where we are rewarded with views of the remnant glaciers. It’s not too far from here to the summit itself where you can relish the views from the highest point in Africa! Like most dormant volcanoes, the slopes of Kilimanjaro are mostly of reasonably low angle with occasional steeper sections, none of which are more famous than the Breach Wall - a towering cliff of snow and ice descending dramatically from the summit slopes. Our ascent routes circle below the Breach Wall, traversing around the mountain to climb more gentle slopes to the summit.

The Shira-Barafu route is incredibly varied in their topography and plant life. Each day we ascend through the various climatic zones, each with unique and different views and highlights. What is initially lush rainforest, thins to become alpine heather that allows views to the surrounding scenery and the upper mountain that is often bathed in a soft glow in the warm morning and evening light. Then we enter the alpine moorland with a cornucopia of weird and exotic plants. Nowhere is this more pronounced than on your arrival into Barranco Camp, home to a large stand of Senecio Kilimanjari, a tree whose form appears to have been the brainchild of Dr. Seuss!

The upper mountain features varied volcanic terrain that in places have a tortured appearance, the result of heated lava explosions and resultant flows that have long since cooled. But it is the summit day that amazes most. Remnant glaciers are scattered around the summit crater looking like giant icebergs after the tide has gone. Close to the top of the mountain, the route takes you close to some of the summit glaciers that glisten in the morning light. Soft hues massage the sky as dawn highlights the layers in the stratosphere. It is a view to behold as you take those final steps to the summit – the goal barely tangible up to that point – yet finally achieved. The reality and significance of the moment is unique to each and every one of us and becomes a moment that is your own to hold on to forever.

The climb itself is little more than trekking on well-formed tracks and the camps are at sites established by the Tanzanian National Park Service. At each camp there are Rangers in residence, usually living in small huts.

Each day we climb for 4-8 hours between camps. Our final summit day begins in the early hours of the morning to reveal a magnificent sunrise and panoramic wonder from the summit. The climb to the summit is strenuous due to the altitude and is a long way, but it is appropriate for people who have a sense of adventure and want to see the warm glow of the dawn spread across the African plains!

Highly qualified local guides, porters and cooks will accompany the group allowing you to enjoy the experience and focus on the climb.

No trip to Africa is complete without experiencing a Safari and as Tanzania has some of the most incredible animal populations on the continent, we highly recommend that after the climb you sit back and enjoy the Safari experience!

  • African Safaris

No visit to Africa is complete without a classic African safari experience! At Adventure Consultants, we have selected safari options that cater to everyone and cover some of Tanzania's most spectacular wildlife habitats. Our safaris explore the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater World Heritage Area and Lake Manyara National Park.

The park is divided up into three areas with the Serengeti plains to the south, where the wildebeest breed from December to May; as well as zebra, gazelle, impala, buffalo also reside in large numbers during the wet season. The Western Corridor is home to the Grumeti River and the infamous Nile crocodiles, colobus monkeys and hippos. The annual migration passes through this region from May to July. The Northern Serengeti area is covered by open woodlands and hills, and this area is best to see elephant, giraffe, dik-dik and the migration between July to August, and in November.

Safari Dean Staples EleSerengeti National Park

Serengeti means 'Endless Plains' in Maasai, it is one of Tanzania’s most famous parks and is well known for the 'Big Five' - Maasai lion, African leopard, African bush elephant, black rhinoceros and the African buffalo. It covers a huge area of nearly 14,750 square kilometres of grassland plains, savanna, riverine forest and woodlands. This park borders with Kenya to the north, where it continues as the Maasai Mara National Reserve and to the south-east is the Ngorongoro Crater, the Grumeti/Ikorongo Game Reserves to the west and to the east/northeast, the Loliondo Game Control Area. Together, these make up the larger Serengeti Ecosystem.

    MG 6938Ngorongoro Crater

The world’s largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera at 600 metres deep, 20kms across and covering an area of 300 square kilometres, the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking and once-in-a-lifetime wonder to behold. One of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only conservation area in Tanzania that protects wildlife and allows human occupation at the same time. Originally named by the Maasai as El-Nkoronkoro (‘Gift of Life’), the crater is home to the Maasai community.

Some 25,000 large animals call the crater home including the endangered black rhino (current population of around 25), the Cape buffalo, hippo’s, wildebeest, Maasai lions, Grants zebra, over 500 species of birds, eland and gazelles. The annual migrations also pass through the crater, seeing 1.7 million wildebeest, 260,000 zebra and 470,000 gazelles moving south into the area in December and north in June.

Why not arrange a private expedition to climb Mount Kenya in preparation for your Kilimanjaro climb?

We can schedule Mount Kenya departures to coincide with Kilimanjaro departures so you can pre-acclimatise on this great peak - the second highest point in Africa and a fabulous climb in its own right - before transferring directly onto your Mount Kilimanjaro expedition.

    Mt Kenya 2Lenana Peak Trek
From forest to moorland and alpine meadows, the landscape surrounding Africa's second highest peak, Mount Kenya is a veritable trekker's delight! Our Lenana Peak Trek traverses across several distinct ecological zones, each abundant with exotic equatorial flora and fauna, towards the extinct volcano of Mount Kenya where we climb Lenana Peak, the mountains third highest point. Attracting less visitors than it's famous cousin, Kilimanjaro, Lenana Peak is a spectacular and achievable African adventure for all ages.

    Kenya Safari
Given its extremely close location to Arusha and its fascinating contrasts, why not take the time to explore the wonders of Kenya. Include Kenya’s oldest and largest National Park, Tsavo East, which borders the Tsavo West Park and offers a variety of habitats. There is also Amboseli Park, known for its elephant population and Maasai communities. Perhaps an escape to the central highlands or to one of Kenya’s tropical beaches is appealing, or join our 7 day Kenyan Safari option – it is easy to arrange your preferred side trip and contact your client liaison if interested in exploring this further.

Contact us to discuss these options in more detail.

Zanzibar 1There is no better way than to spend time in Tanzania than with a visit to the tropical island of Zanzibar, located on the crystal clear Indian Ocean. The island has a huge variety of accommodation options as well as properties to stay at and for any advice, please contact your Client Liaison.

A few points to consider when travelling to Zanzibar are:

    • The location that you would like to stay at, take the tide into consideration.
    • Our favourite beaches include Matemwe, Kizimkazi, Fumba, Nungwi and Mafia Island.
    • Spend time exploring Stone Town - a World Heritage Site.
    • Early bookings are hugely advantageous at any time of year, but especially during the busy season of Christmas and New Year when hotels have a nightly minimum booking requirement of 5-7 days.

Shouldering a heavy burden can be debilitating at higher elevations and sap crucial energy levels right when you need it. This option of an extra porter is available on any of our Kilimanjaro departures and enables you to climb without a heavy pack.

We offer Privately Guided Expeditions where you have the services of a top AC western guide as well as the support of Tanzanian guides, cooks and porters who work together on the expedition to ensure your needs are best met. AC have been fortunate enough to work with many private Kilimanjaro groups over the years with exceptional results.

    • The Climb

Why do you choose a different route compared to other companies?
Historically Kilimanjaro sees more traffic on certain routes and less on others. We climb the mountain by the picturesque Shira-Barafu routes, which traverses several of the scenic micro-environments found at the different elevations on the mountain. We try to combine a bit of a longer route on the way up to assist you in acclimatising and enjoying the very scenic terrain, then link up with a more direct descent to facilitate the return to town and the start of your safari, if you so choose. See the Itinerary section above for further route details and a map.

Can we climb the mountain via another route?
Yes, we can arrange treks that climb the mountain via different routes. We recently switched to the Shira-Barafu Route from the Machame route which has become very busy of late, but we can arrange Machame treks for interested groups. The Northern Circuit route is also an option for private groups looking for a less popular route to the summit. Please enquire with our team for more information.

What is the best time of the year to go?
Kilimanjaro is large enough to have its own weather system, so the weather can be somewhat unpredictable. The rainy months are April to mid-June and November. The most popular months to go are late-June to September, and then from mid-January to mid-March.

      How hard is it really?
Contrary to what most people believe, Kilimanjaro is not just a “hike”. You need to be comfortable carrying a backpack, have a reasonable level of cardiovascular fitness and enjoy sleeping in a tent! Summit day can be very long and cold, but very rewarding, especially when the sun comes up!

    • Safari

There is so much to choose from safari-wise after my climb, can you offer me some options?
You are right, there is A LOT to choose from and seeing as your trip may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, we want to make sure you see everything you want to. There are plenty of lodges to choose from and the properties that we visit come from extensive research. Our staff often spend time visiting and exploring the newer lodges to secure some of the best choices out there. We feel that our selections are top quality and offer some of the best from the variety to choose from. Contact our office for specific details for our safari lodges.

If I go on safari, does my guide continue on to the safari with me? If not, who leads the safari?
Your local mountain guide will not continue on the safari, but you will be passed onto one of our excellent local safari guides that will escort you on your safari and return you back to your tented camp/lodge at the end of each day.

What is the accommodation like on the safari?
World class. We stay in tented camps that have actual running water, electricity and indoor showers. When we stay in the lodges, there are huge sitting rooms with picture windows to watch the sunsets from. Food is second to none with the properties serving excellent cuisine!

What are the days like on safari?
Typically, you can expect to spend 4-7 hours in a Landcruiser, stopping frequently for photos and to watch the amazing wildlife in their daily routine. You will arrive at your tented camp where a welcome drink is usually served, followed by free time in which to freshen up before sundowner drinks and dinner. After a sumptuous breakfast at the start of the next day, you start all over again.

    • Food, Accommodation & Facilities

What sort of hotels do we stay at in the city?
Prior to and after the trek/safari, Adventure Consultants will arrange your Arusha accommodation and our chosen properties maintain a high level of customer service and quality aligning with AC standards. For our luxury itinerary, we usually stay at the 5-star Arusha Coffee Lodge which is located just on the edge of Arusha and for our scheduled itinerary, we frequently stay at Rivertrees Country Inn located halfway between Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport. This property is set amongst 10 acres of lush forest that is home to birds and wildlife.

Will I be sharing a tent or room with other climbers? Is there a single room option on this trip?
When in Arusha and on safari, the hotels/lodges are priced on a twin-share basis. On the mountain, two team members will share a tent. There is the option of a hotel single room and mountain tent supplement, please contact our office for details.

Can I upgrade my hotel accommodation?
Absolutely! We profile a number of 4 and 5-star hotel upgrade options in our Add Ons tab above, or simply contact your Client Liaison to discuss your accommodation preferences.

What kind of food will there be on the mountain?
Our chefs are very well known on the mountain for being able to produce fresh salads, fried chicken, tasty soups and toasted sandwiches halfway up the mountain! Our menu is varied and tasty. Make sure you let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements, as we can cater for almost anything.

    • Travel

What time should I arrive and where do I meet my guides?
Please plan to fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you will also clear Tanzanian customs. Typically, we will arrange an airport transfer to take you to your hotel. Prior to your trip, our office will send you a final details email including hotel details, information on your guide, details on when and where you will meet your guide, as well as other pertinent last minute information.

What if I arrive early or depart late?
We ask that you try to arrive on time, so early is great! Your bags then have a chance to catch up with you, if for some reason they are delayed. If you do arrive early, we will be happy to help you with your hotel arrangements and additional transfers. The same goes for departing later, please contact the office for details.

Are there any entry or visa requirements?
Please check this with your travel agent prior to travelling. Some nationalities are required to have a Tanzanian visa issued in advance, whereas for others, it can be issued on arrival.

I would like to also visit Zanzibar after my climb, is this possible?
Of course it is and we highly recommend it! From the spice market in Stone Town to the coastlines of the island, the 45-minute flight from Arusha transports you to one of Africa's greatest gems. We can arrange your schedule to either go out after a safari or head out to the island straight after your climb. Our office is more than happy to provide advice on this magnificent holiday location.

What other sightseeing options are available in the area?
We can assist in arranging an array of sightseeing tours to complete your holiday in Africa, from day tours to the nearby Masaai villages and local coffee plantations, to extended adventures in neighbouring areas, such as a seven day Kenyan Safari or three day Rwanda Gorilla Trek. Contact our office for more information.

    • Clothing & Equipment

How heavy will my pack be?
Typically 6-10kg/15-25 lbs. Each day, you will be carrying water, snacks, other essential items and any layers that you will need for the day. Porters will carry the bulk of your equipment and clothing, which will be awaiting your arrival at your camp.

    • Guides & Team Members

How many climbers will be on this expedition?
Our standard departure teams have a minimum size of 4 members and a maximum size of 12 members. Our Luxury Expeditions are run as private departures, you are welcome to choose the number of team members you bring along, up to a maximum of 12 trekkers. Please see the Trip Notes for ratio pricing.

How much should I tip my guide staff?
Tipping is mandatory as your guides, porters and camp staff work very hard on the mountain. Suggested tipping amounts will be indicated in your final details letter which will be emailed 3-4 weeks prior to your departure, as this is dependent on your group size and the number of local staff employed.

    • Health & Fitness

Do I really need to get a Yellow Fever vaccination?
It all depends on where you are travelling from enroute to Tanzania. We do recommend this vaccination as the advice changes frequently and you never know what the Tanzanian official's standpoint will be on any given day. Please talk to your doctor prior to travelling.

What are the skills/prior experiences required for this climb?
This is one of our beginner trips and so the only thing required is to have a thirst for adventure! It also helps to be able to carry a light backpack, have a good base level of fitness.

What is the conditioning level needed for this climb?
A good general level of fitness is required and being able to walk uphill on uneven ground for extended periods of time is advantageous. Please also check out our AC Blog article Fit to Trek for more detail on what you can do to prepare for this trip and our Fitness Training page for detail on training programs.

How long is a typical day on the mountain?
Your morning starts with a pan of warm water and a hot drink delivered to your tent door. We then rise and meet for breakfast around 7am, with an aim hit the trail by about 8am. We usually trek for between 5 and 7 hours, taking time for photographs and breaks along the way, including a  sumptuous picnic lunch, before arriving into our next campsite in the afternoon by 3 or 4pm.

How do I know this is the right trip for me?
We offer trips to suit all levels of ability and ambition, from your first mountain experience to extreme ascents and everything in between. To help you navigate the choices available, our trips are graded by both the level of physical exertion and the level of skill required, allowing you to find your perfect expedition match. These ratings are displayed in the icons at the top of each expedition page, with a further explanation available by clicking on the accompanying question mark. A full run-down of the categories can be found on our Difficulty Ratings page and our team is more than happy to discuss your experience to find the right trip for you.

    • Communication & Electronic Devices

What type of communication is available on the climb?
The local guides carry radios and cell phones, so are in daily contact with our agent's Arusha office. If you bring a cell phone from home, do double-check the cost of global roaming with your network supplier. Local SIM cards are easily available for purchase and offer better reception, so please advise if you would like assistance with arranging one. Do please note however that once on the mountain there is extremely limited cell phone reception and no internet access available.

    • Insurance

What insurance do we need to get?
On all of our international expeditions, we require you to have insurance for any personal or medical incidences that may occur during the expedition. This should include cover for illness, medical emergency or evacuation as well as trip cancellation, baggage loss, damage or theft, or any other such mishap that may occur.

      Do I need evacuation insurance?
Yes, it is very important. Many of our expeditions are in remote places with no roads and developing medical services. In the unlikely event that you get sick, you want to get to good medical care ASAP.

Who do you recommend for insurance?
Options vary depending on your nationality. When you have confirmed your spot on the expedition with us, we will send you comprehensive information on various options which will serve as a good starting point. Please also visit our Expedition Insurance page.

      What is trip cancellation insurance?
Trip cancellation insurance may allow you to cancel your trip without losing any pre-paid expenses. Adventure Consultants highly recommends trip cancellation insurance for all of our trips. If circumstances cause us to cancel a trip (minimum numbers are not reached or travel to a country becomes too dangerous) then we will refund your fees paid, but trip cancellation insurance covers your airfare and any other costs that you may have incurred.

    • Fees & Payments

How much should I budget for this expedition? How much cash should I plan to bring?
Members are usually really excited to purchase local artisan crafts and most of the places that sell such items don’t take credit cards. There are cash machines in town but in the villages cash is king! Most get by with US$400-$800 for gifts and additional expenses.

      What is your cancellation policy?
Please see 'Payment Conditions' above for our cancellation policy.

    • Photography

I love the photographs in your brochure and on your website, are they for sale?
Yes, our images are available for licensing or purchase. Please contact our office for further information.

    • Safety

Is the area around Kilimanjaro safe?
With any overseas travel, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and know the situation on the ground. We work hard with our local agent to assure that local situations, if any, are closely monitored for your safety. For years now, the areas on and around the mountain have seen no conflict. In fact, local industry and prosperity is thriving in Arusha! We always suggest that you check with your consulate before travelling to check on any travel advisories.

    • Employment

I want to become a mountain guide, where do I start?
Those with limited experience generally start by taking an alpine climbing course and then go out and climb for a few years. You generally should have at least 5 years of climbing and/or teaching/guiding experience. You need avalanche and medical training and then you can apply to do an NZ Mountain Guides Course or the equivalent in your country, aligned with the IFMGA.

Please see Adventure Consultants Mountain Guide Scholarships on our Career Opportunities page and check the New Zealand Mountain Guides Association for more information.

All excellent!! We both remarked how well the meals were on the mountain, it really is astonishing how excellently the meals were prepared even at high altitude! The meals at the lodges and safari camps we stayed at were all excellent as well. We did not have a bad meal the entire time we were there!

Jumping for joy on the summit

Very cohesive and highly functioning team of guides and carriers which stood out by comparison to others on the mountain. It seems that they are well looked after and happy to work for AC and its local affiliate. This greatly contributes to enhancing the experience for the trekkers. Congrats to all involved at AC for achieving this.
