Dispatches - Vinson & South Pole 2015

In the Southern Hemisphere summer, when the sun is in the sky 24 hours each day, Adventure Consultants is operating a private expedition over 3 weeks to the summit of Vinson Massif followed by a ski inside the last degree to the South Pole.

Our 2015 expedition commences on January 1, 2015.  The team meets in Punta Arenas on the southern tip of Chile and flies to an ice runway on the Antarctic continent, from there, they begin their Vinson climb.

We will be posting regular updates from the team on this page as we follow their progress to the bottom of the world!

14 JAN - A QUICK DASH TO THE POLE

Following their successful summit of Vinson Massif the team descended to Base Camp and boarded the Twin Otter that was waiting to meet them for their return flight to Union Glacier.

Motivated by the availability of seats on an early flight back to Punta Arenas the team then decided to fly directly to the South Pole and then back to Union Glacier.  Job done and before they new it they were relishing in the comforts of the Mundo Dreams hotel in Punta Arenas!

11 JAN - SUMMIT SUCCESS!

Fantastic news from Dean at High Camp is that the team summitted Vinson Massif today!  Congratulations to all!

Although winds had been forecasted to be between 5-15kmph, they did not rise above 5kmph, which was fortuitous as the temperatures were a rather chilly -30C!

The team are getting ready to descend to Vinson Base Camp and move on to the South Pole phase of their journey.  Congratulations once again!

10 JAN - AWAITING BETTER WEATHER

The update from Dean and the team is that due to cloud and light snow at High Camp yesterday their planned summit bid has been delayed.  The forecast for today was much better so we are eagerly awaiting news from the mountain!

4 JAN - TRIP UNDERWAY

After meeting in Punta Arenas and completing their gear checks and briefing formalities the team are now in Antarctica!  They stopped briefly for only one hour in Punta Arenas and are now enjoying great weather in Vinson Base Camp. Expedition Leader Dean Staples reports that it is very warm, in fact t-shirt weather!

The final flight to Base Camp is just an hour in the Twin Otter aircraft over amazing mountains.
