Greetings!

15 October 2007

We've skied and climbed our way through winter 2007, and we have now started rockclimbing, biking and kitesurfing, and all those other good things we do around here in spring, only to have it return to wild winter conditions again! Such is the time of year, October in New Zealand. However, in other parts of the world it's the perfect time to be outdoors and we've just had climbers return from Cho Oyu and Elbrus, and teams about to depart up the Khumbu Valley in Nepal to climb Ama Dablam and Island Peak.

This month we're bringing you a very special offer on Macpac Interwool garments, which is the Merino blend base layer of choice for all our guides - please read on for details of how to outfit yourself in high performance great looking outdoor clothing from Macpac.

We had to do something to take our minds off the rugby! Read on about this super deal and current happenings at AC with our expeditions.

Yours truly,  Suze and the AC crew

Difficult conditions prevailed on Cho Oyu this year

The AC Cho Oyu expedition led by veteran guide Mike Roberts, along with Steve Moffat, was a resounding success with 11 people in the AC team topping out!  Difficult conditions prevailed on Cho Oyu this season causing most teams to give up their attempts. This success was due to Mike Roberts in his role as leader utilizing his many years of experience and being canny with the weather calls where he could see the potential to summit while all the other guided teams gave up. The AC team under Mikes leadership returned to the mountain as a week long storm abated and they summited on the 2nd October. Congratulations go to Nicki and Cheryl Bart of Australia (who possibly became the first mother and daughter team to summit Cho Oyu), Mathew Holt of the UK, Leifur Orn Svavarsson of Iceland, Roman Danyliw of the USA and Mike and Steve of New Zealand.  Also on top were the irrepressible Sherpas to whom we owe so much, Chhuldim, Phu Tashi, Nawang Chongba and Sangay Dorje. Lastly, but not least, a special mention must go to Will Elrick from Australia who made it to 8000m but missed out on the summit due to time constraints. Will lost a leg many years ago in an accident so he made the entire climb on his crutches. What a hurculean and truly inspiring effort!

Mike Roberts is leading the AC expedition to Mt Everest next spring and this effort is an indication of why he is considered one of the very best in the business!

The Cho Oyu dispatches, written by guides Mike Roberts and Steve Moffat, can be read at Cho Oyu 2007.

Cho Oyu 2008 is open and bookings are coming in already - if you're going to climb an 8000m peak in 2008 then it's time to start planning and training for such a big project now! When Steve isn't guiding at 8000m, he's here at his desk organising our next expedition, so give him a call if you want the inside story on what it takes to achieve success on Cho Oyu.

European Ascents - Elbrus and Chamonix

Luis Benitez and Mark Sedon had a lot of fun with their various groups on Three Peaks Nepal and in Chamonix during July and August. We had 18 clients reach the highest point in Europe, with some people climbing their first mountain and others revelling in another 7 Summits adventure. As one team member put it (a seasoned climber, he was on his first trip with AC) 'I'd forgotten how to have fun on an expedition!'.

Mark took his now famous team 'The Aussie Four' onto Chamonix after Elbrus for some fantastic mixed climbing in the Alps. Conditions on Mont Blanc were not suitable for an ascent, but they got out climbing every day nontheless, with local guide Paolo giving direction where required. Here's the low down from Mark;

Landing in Moscow and being confronted with the Russian Cyrillic alphabet was a little intimidating. But thankfully our agent was waiting patiently outside the customs whom whisked me through the busy city to our hotel.

That’s how the Mt Elbrus expedition started and it continued onwards, south to the Caucacus Range and up the mountain on a magnificent day. It was an international collection of climbers with a wide range of experience. I was truly blown away on how beautiful Russia was and enjoyed climbing the mountain with a great bunch of people.

From there I flew to France with my 3.5 Australian mates (one is half Kiwi). We tried to climb Mt Blanc, but over a metre of new snow shut down all attempts on the mountain. We got into the hills regardless and climbed around at the head of the Valley Blanche. It was an enjoyable experience with comfortable mountain huts and between climbing ventures we made good use of the alpine bars and French hospitality.

Mark Sedon

Dispatches for the expedition can be read at Elbrus 2007

Best idea you've heard all year..

So, it's been a long time, many months in fact, since you last went climbing. How about finishing your year in style - come to NZ and climb Mt Cook! November and December are some of the best months to climb New Zealand's highest peak, the coveted and challenging Aoraki or 'cloud piercer' (New Zealand's name in Maori is 'Aotearoa', meaning 'Land of the Long White Cloud'). If you've the right amount of prior experience then you need an airfare, NZ$4800 for the climb and 6 days; if you are just beginning your climbing then you need 18 days - take our 10 day Alpine Climbing Course, rest for 2 days, then 6 days for the climb, all up NZ$7555. Perfect training for anything higher around the world too - jusk ask Sir Ed or any one of our Kiwi Everest summit guides.

The season does extend into January/February for Cook, give us a call to discuss. There are many other great peaks in our backyard to climb too (south face of Douglas comes into condition soon...)
