The second highest point in Africa, Mt Kenya is an exciting pre climb to our Mt Kilimanjaro expedition, or an adventure on its own. Mt Kenya is an extinct volcano with jagged peaks rising to 5199m out of the heart of Africa. It has three main peaks; Batian, Nelion, and Lenana which are permanently iced with snow and small glaciers and it is the high peak of Batian or Nelion that we do a technical climb on.

We ascend via the Sirimon Route to the high peak of Batian on moderate rock steps and then descend down the Chogoria Valley, completing an interesting and challenging traverse. The route is predominantly on the dry side of the mountain which offers some of the finest trekking in Kenya. It is sometimes slightly technical climbing on good rock, but we allow time for sufficient training of the skills required for the climb.

Mount Kenya is located in central Kenya, just south of the equator, around 150 km (95 miles) north-northeast of Nairobi. The area around the mountain is protected in the Mount Kenya National Park, which is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mountain can often be seen from high-rise buildings in Nairobi.

The climb of Mt Kenya is designed to be followed by a climb of Kilimanjaro which in turn can be followed by a Safari through the wonders of the Serengeti, Rift valley and Ngorongoro crater, where the variety of wildlife will completely captivate you. The three trips are designed to give you either the ultimate African climbing adventure or just climb Mt Kenya for a superb remote summit in an outstanding setting.

We climb the mountain via the North Face Standard Route.

This expedition features a smorgasbord of African culture and scenery, providing a fabulous excuse to visit this wild continent.

  • Moderately technical climbing on Nelion or Batian
  • Ascend the trekking route, Lenana Peak
  • Astounding flora and fauna in the different mountain zones
  • Excellent moderate altitude adventure
