No visit to Africa is complete without a classic African safari experience! At Adventure Consultants, we have selected safari options that cater to everyone and cover some of Tanzania's most spectacular wildlife habitats. Our safaris explore the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater World Heritage Area and Lake Manyara National Park.
The park is divided up into three areas with the Serengeti plains to the south, where the wildebeest breed from December to May; as well as zebra, gazelle, impala, buffalo also reside in large numbers during the wet season. The Western Corridor is home to the Grumeti River and the infamous Nile crocodiles, colobus monkeys and hippos. The annual migration passes through this region from May to July. The Northern Serengeti area is covered by open woodlands and hills, and this area is best to see elephant, giraffe, dik-dik and the migration between July to August, and in November.
Serengeti National Park
Serengeti means 'Endless Plains' in Maasai, it is one of Tanzania’s most famous parks and is well known for the 'Big Five' - Maasai lion, African leopard, African bush elephant, black rhinoceros and the African buffalo. It covers a huge area of nearly 14,750 square kilometres of grassland plains, savanna, riverine forest and woodlands. This park borders with Kenya to the north, where it continues as the Maasai Mara National Reserve and to the south-east is the Ngorongoro Crater, the Grumeti/Ikorongo Game Reserves to the west and to the east/northeast, the Loliondo Game Control Area. Together, these make up the larger Serengeti Ecosystem.
Ngorongoro Crater
The world’s largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera at 600 metres deep, 20kms across and covering an area of 300 square kilometres, the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking and once-in-a-lifetime wonder to behold. One of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only conservation area in Tanzania that protects wildlife and allows human occupation at the same time. Originally named by the Maasai as El-Nkoronkoro (‘Gift of Life’), the crater is home to the Maasai community.
Some 25,000 large animals call the crater home including the endangered black rhino (current population of around 25), the Cape buffalo, hippo’s, wildebeest, Maasai lions, Grants zebra, over 500 species of birds, eland and gazelles. The annual migrations also pass through the crater, seeing 1.7 million wildebeest, 260,000 zebra and 470,000 gazelles moving south into the area in December and north in June.
Lake Manyara National Park (Luxury or Private Safari Only)
Lake Manyara is renowned for the flamingos that inhabit the edge of the lake, along with more than 400 other species of birds - a literal bird-watching paradise, with visitors to the park expecting to see upwards of 100 different species of bird on any day. Leopards, Maasai lions, cheetahs, elephants, blue monkeys, dik-dik, gazelles, hippopotami, Maasai giraffe, impala, zebras and many more wild animals also inhabit this park with many able to be seen throughout the year.
