Trip Ends

Please note that the itinerary may change at any time and that factors such as weather, team member health, logistics etc. will no doubt create some change in the actual dates of the programme.

IN AND AROUND KATHMANDU

Team members meet in Kathmandu, the capital of the Kingdom of Nepal. We are greeted at the airport by our Kathmandu representatives, who whisk you through the thriving city to your hotel.

Once everybody has arrived we have a team meeting where introductions and the trip outline are completed. You will be briefed on the trip preparations and we can sort out any queries you have.  We then have a welcome dinner at one of our favourite Kathmandu restaurants together with the group.

Your guide will advise you on good shopping and the better restaurants to visit while you are in the city.  There are plenty of shops and entertainment to suit all tastes. From excellent bookshops to mountain bike hire, souvenir shopping and bars; Kathmandu’s retail fraternity is waiting to meet you!

We have a full day in Kathmandu when we can sort out any equipment problems you may have, but don’t worry if you have forgotten something, there are plenty of good outdoor shops in the city.

THE TREK

From Kathmandu, we fly into Lukla, the gateway to the Upper Khumbu. This is the heart of Sherpa country and we get to enjoy genuine Sherpa hospitality in beautiful and well-kept lodges that we have carefully chosen during the years we have been visiting this region. There's nothing quite like sitting back after a good walk to enjoy some of the world's most spectacular scenery while sampling the local food and beverages.

We make our way slowly up the valley, stopping for a few days in Namche Bazaar to enjoy the markets and to explore the local villages. We make a day trip to Thame, the last outpost on the ancient trading route over the Nangpa La, a pass between Nepal and Tibet.

We also visit Kunde, with its Himalayan Trust Hospital. We then climb up past Tengboche Monastery and take a closer look at the beauty of Ama Dablam. Then it's on through the high Sherpa villages of Dingboche and Lobuche to Gorak Shep. Taking our time is important as it gives us ample opportunity to take in all the sights as we acclimatise to the high altitudes.

A climb of Kala Patar rewards us with exceptional views of Mount Everest and its neighbours, Nuptse and Lhotse. The next highlight is a visit to Everest Base Camp itself.

After our 'Everest Experience' we trek to the Base Camp for Island Peak via a high alpine pass, the Kongma La and on to the village of Chukhung in the Imja Khola Valley. The pass crossing provides some of the best high-altitude views anywhere in the Himalaya! For those who would like a couple of easier trekking days, the option is available to hike around to Chhukhung via Pheriche and Dingboche with a staff member and there is also the option to camp at Island Peak Base Camp.

The Khumbu Trek concludes with a relaxed trip back down to Lukla and a flight back to Kathmandu. We provide the most affable and experienced western guides working in conjunction with our excellent Sherpa friends, to promise you an experience of a lifetime!

NOTE: This trek runs alongside our pre and post monsoon Island Peak expeditions, making this a perfect trip for friends, couples or families who want to share an adventurous journey without the need to both be climbing the mountain.

There is also the option to extend the trip by including a side trip to the Gokyo Valley.

GOKYO EXTENSION

For those trekking over the Cho La Pass to visit the Gokyo region, you will split off from the main group after Dingboche and trek to Dzongla where we stay overnight. An early start the next morning sees the group going over the 5380m pass by late mid-morning (fantastic views back to Ama Dablam and of Cholatse) and then descending off the steeper side of the pass into boulder fields and trails with a more remote feeling to them. By the end of a superb day’s Himalayan trekking, we reach the small village of Dragnag. The next day we cross the Ngozumpa Glacier and after a couple of hours reach Gokyo for a well-earned rest. There are options to climb Gokyo Ri (5357m) later on or trek further up the valley to view some of the stunning Gokyo lakes (of which there are five).

We then begin the trek out from the Gokyo region with a beautiful day of trekking to Machermo, before re-joining the main trail at Namche Bazaar. The trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla is a long day before the early morning flight back out to Kathmandu on the last day. Departure flights from Kathmandu need to be scheduled for the final day of the trek itinerary in case we are delayed by weather in Lukla.
