The highest peak in New Zealand at 3754m (12,316ft), Aoraki / Mt Cook is a popular objective and we ascend via the classic Linda Glacier route. The climbing is strenuous and of moderate technical difficulty; the summit is one of the most satisfying and exhilarating in Australasia. Aoraki is truly Himalayan in size, protruding 3,000m from the valley floor.
We fly into the new Plateau Hut, re-built in 2005, and base ourselves here for our summit attempt. The climb takes 16 to 22 hours and to get the best of the conditions we schedule our departure for around midnight. We climb up the Linda Glacier which steepens to moderately challenging ice climbing followed by a couple of pitches of steeper rock and mixed climbing through the summit rocks. The angle then eases a little as we focus on the summit ice cap for the final push to the highest point in New Zealand!
When weather and time permit we may elect to climb over two days, with a bivouac half way up the route to give ourselves a good start for the following morning and to soak up the high alpine ambience.
Duration: 6 days.
Guide Ratio : 1:1 only, and we require people to have relevant mountaineering experience.
Departure: ex Wanaka, New Zealand.
The best time to climb is during the period November to April each year. Subject to conditions at the time, access through the Linda Glacier can be restricted during the height of summer (mid-January to late-February).
Price: NZ$5,150 includes air access flight

Julian, Australia, Mt Cook Ascent, summer 2004:
“I wanted to go with a company that had a world wide operation, given Adventure Consultants history, I knew it would be a very safe and professional outfit…I was right! The guides did an outstanding job – very approachable and always willing to share their knowledge. The food was excellent, the guides were great chef’s, and going up the mountain I always felt safe and appreciated their professionalism, patience and great attitude”
John, NZ, Mt Cook Ascent, summer 2003:
“Thanks guys for helping us make such a wonderful trip, our guides pushed us when we needed it and their constant efforts kept us safe and confident. The climb for us was a very special event – the product of a dream 4 years ago to tackle something almost impossible. It has been a spiritual journey and on the day, the getting there was as important as making the summit. It is an event neither of us will forget. Thanks again – and especially for the instant phone call to my wife when we were on the summit!”
