Aconcagua, “The Sentinel of Stone”, is the highest peak outside of the Himalaya. Located in Western Argentina - the heart of the Central Andes, it is South America’s highest peak and one of the much sought after "Seven Summits".

Adventure Consultants is operating three Aconcagua Expeditions this season. The teams will meet in Mendoza, Argentina, before beginning their acclimatisation and adventure to climb this challenging 6,962m Andean giant.

We will be posting regular updates from all of the teams on this page. Bookmark this page and follow along!

Aconcagua 2015/16 Trip #3 Course and Ascent  January 29 - February 25, 2016

During the Aconcagua Course and Ascent programme, members will develop their high altitude mountaineering skills and put them to use.  We begin by acclimatising on the nearby Cerro Vallecitos, where our guides will deliver the appropriate instruction in mountaineering techniques, camp craft and managing oneself at high altitude, resulting in an enhanced summit success rate on Aconcagua.

Feb 16 - Camp Two

We are now at Camp 2 at 5450m, it's very windy but all are doing well, eating and drinking well. Tomorrow we're planning a short day with a hike to Camp 3 but we'll come back to Camp 2 tor rest. Then we are looking at our summit phase after that which is looking good for the 19th or 20th.

Feb 15 - Camp Two Carry

We made our trip up to Camp Two and back down again today with no problems and got back to Camp One in plenty of time to enjoy a delicious dinner of chicken and potato.

Tomorrow we'll move up to Camp Two and although the winds will be a little stronger the next couple of days, it is looking good for our summit bid at the end of the week.

Feb 14 - Camp One

Today we moved up to Camp One and made the climb in good time, enjoying a very nice day in the mountains. The weather is good and not too windy.  Tomorrow we plan to make a carry of equipment up to Camp Two. Happy Valentines day to all our loved ones!

Feb 12 - Carry to Camp One

Today we made our first carry of food and equipment to Camp One at 4850m. It was an excellent day and all the members did really well, making the journey to Camp One in about five hours.  It is really good to be on the mountain at last and we are feeling the benefit of our acclimatisation on Cerro Vallecitos!

Feb 11 - Rest Day

Today we enjoyed a rest day which we spent eating and drinking some wine!  We had our medical check with the Base Camp doctors and all passed with flying colour and oxygen saturation over 90% thanks to our acclimatisation on Vallecitos

Tomorrow we will make our first trip to Camp One, carrying a load of food and equipment.  We are SO excited to be getting on the mountain at last!

Feb 10 - Base Camp

Today we reached Base Camp at Plaza Argentina after our third day trekking. We have just finished an incredible meal prepared by our amazing team of cooks and have had a long meeting to discuss the next phase of the expedition.

The team are a little tired and so looking forward to tomorrow's rest day and It is very exciting to finally be at the base of the mountain, ready to start our climb.

Today we got our first view of Aconcagua and the polish Glacier as we trekked to our second camp at Casa Piedra.

All the team are eating lots - like pumas according to Luco! Tomorrow we have a big push into Base Camp at 4200m.  Everyone is excited and looking forward to the next phase.

Feb 8 - To Aconcagua

Following our Vallecitos climb, we took an extra day in Penitentes to recover after our climb and subsequent long journey - and, of course, a celebration of our success so far, in the form of some great Argentinian Malbec!

We have now begun our trek to our Base Camp at Plaza Argentina and will spend tonight at Pampa Lenas.  We have just finished a barbeque with our arrieros (mule drivers) and are enjoying some incredible weather with clear starry skies above.

Feb 6 - Vallecitos Summit!

Yesterday we set off for the summit of Vallecitos 5440m at 6am and at 14.30 we reached the summit  with Gavin, Pablo (Paul) and John.  Elaine climbed as far as the Col just before the summit ridge.  We returned back to El Salto camp al 19.30. A loooooong day!

This morning we woke up at 8.00am and now we are going to Penitentes as muchos fast as we can!
The problem is that travel on the road to Penitentes is very slow because of landslides from the last storm.

All the members are happy but tired, after the challenge of Vallecitos so we will spend an extra night in Penitentes to recuperate before beginning the trek to Plaza Argentina.

Feb 4 - Training Day

It has been another great day on Vallecitos!  We climbed for two hours above Base Camp, up to 4500m.  Here we did some crampon practice and learnt how best to walk and climb in different snow conditions.  We learnt about different breathing techniques and how to conserve our energy at altitude.

We met another team coming down who summitted Vallecitos this morning.  They said it was a little snowy on top because of the storm earlier in the week, but nothing to worry about.  We are all really looking forward to getting onto the mountain tomorrow, to put our skills into practice and get ready for Aconcagua.

We have just finished our dinner of pasta and tomato sauce and are now heading to bed as we have an early start in the morning!

Feb 3 - Base Camp El Salto

We are now at our Base Camp for Cerro Vallecitos - El Salto Camp at 4200m.  We had a great trek today and we are all doing well.  Every day the weather is getting better!

Tomorrow we will have another day here and will take a hike a couple of hours towards Vallecitos to practice our crampon skills.  We will then return to camp for lunch and then, in the evening, have an early dinner and head to bed ready for our summit bid the following day.

We had a great climb and the weather improved this morning, although the cloud and rain came in again this afternoon.

We have just enjoyed a dinner of spaghetti at the San Bernardo hut and are ready for our 4 hour walk to Piedra Grande camp tomorrow, with our mules loads prepared and ready to go!

Yesterday morning we had the first meeting with the group and it was great to see that everyone has a lot of energy and desire to collaborate.

At 5pm we had our initial briefing which was very productive, answering everyone's questions about the expedition and pledging to lead an expedition with good atmosphere among all, before checking the members equipment.

We then celebrated the start of the expedition with an Argentine "Asado welcome" (barbeque meal) in Facundo Restaurant, with much laughter, a relaxed atmosphere and the best Mendoza´s Malbec!!!

Jan 11 - Strong winds continue

Today the team decided to descend to Base Camp due to extremely strong winds forecasted for the 12th.

Yesterday they climbed to Camp 2, with Leo and Enrique carrying a load food and the members carrying only their snacks for the day. At the Ameghino Col, (5364m) Eddy made the decision to abandon the expedition and will return to the trailhead by helicopter today and tonight will be sleeping in Mendoza.  He will be missed by the rest of the team who have really enjoyed his company so far!

The plan for the rest of the team is to rest tomorrow and start climbing again the following day.

Jan 9 - Move to Camp One

The team moved to Camp One today and are now tucked up in bed and fast asleep.  Tomorrow they will hike towards Camp Two and return to Camp One for the night.

Enrique reports that although it is a little snowy and windy, the weather is not too bad overall.

Jan 8 - On to the mountain

After yesterday's carry to Camp One the team are now ready to move onto the mountain.  They will have one more rest day today and then plan to move to Camp One tomorrow. The weather is still very windy with some snow but we are hopeful that the winds will drop later in the week to allow an attempt at the summit.

"All is well with the group and we made today's hike in only 6hrs; a really good time for this section. The weather is still fine - the cloud is preventing it from being too hot and, although it is stormy high on the mountain currently, we hope that this means it will clear ready for us to move up later in the week."

However, with Leo and Juan (the guides) the only ones drinking wine we are unsure if we have stressed them too much already.
