Stefan was born in Auckland, New Zealand to Swiss parents. He spent much of his life in the mountains, starting out on Mt Ruapehu in the North Island of New Zealand with regular sojourns to Switzerland as a child.

He professed to have started his climbing career in 1978 at the age of 4...on the orange tree in his garden.

When climbing he said likes the feeling of being as far away from home as he has ever been, but still feeling at home.

Most of Stefan's climbing was in the French Alps and western United States and he described his wildest trip as a month long ski touring trip in Mongolia.

After years of ski patrol work in NZ, the USA and France, Stefan was based in Chamonix, France, where he guided full time.  He began guiding in 2008 and became a fully qualified NZMGA/IFMGA Guide in 2011.

Stefan had visual arts degree and was multilingual.  He spoke French, German and "Kiwi" English.

This page is kept as a memoriam to Stefan, as he passed away in 2015. He is dearly missed by everyone who knew him.
