Adventure News 23 December 2016
Our 2016 - 2017 Antarctic season is about to begin with expeditions heading south to climb Vinson Massif, as well as a South Pole Ski the Last Degree expedition. Starting on 26th December, our Vinson Massif expedition climbs Antarctica's highest peak and is being led by AC Guide Steve Moffat. Steve and the team will make their way to the vast Antarctic interior from Punta Arenas in Chile by plane before attempting their climb over a period of five or six days. Soon after, in early January a private expedition team guided by AC Guides Lydia Bradey and Andy Cole will make their way on skis across the last 60 nautical miles (69 miles or 111km) to the South Pole. Both expeditions will be sending daily dispatches detailing their journeys, you can follow them at Vinson dispatches or South Pole Ski the Last Degree dispatches.

Meanwhile those of us in the Southern hemisphere are eagerly anticipating the warm summer months, and the climbing that comes with it! In South America we have an array of expeditions scheduled over the summer and through into the winter. Our popular Aconcagua Course and Ascent still has a few spaces available - it's an ideal opportunity to combine some introductory expedition mountaineering skills with one of the Seven Summits. Or if you're looking to try something completly different, consider climbing the world's highest volcano! Our Ojos del Salado expedition combines the climb with an exploration of some of Chile's extraordinarily scenic volcanic plateau, complete with a soak in the nearby thermal baths at Laguna Verde. For the true alpinists among us an ascent of Alpamayo (5,917m), one of the most coveted ice routes in the world, is not to be missed. On the back of this ascent, we offer a 6 day add-on to climb Artesonraju (6,025m) to deliver a huge amount of climbing in a short timeframe, a very popular option for those who don’t have the time for Himalayan ascents.
