AC General Manager Suze Kelly and Guy Cotter were invited speakers and panellists at the Sustainable Summit Conference held in Aoraki/Mt Cook (NZ) early August. It was a stimulating event with a lot of good discussion and debate around the issues we face in keeping the mountains in a good state for future generations. There were delegates from USA, Nepal, Canada, France, Austria, Borneo, New Zealand and Australia who shared the issues they face in their own countries and ways they have worked to mitigate these problems. While it was universally acknowledged that the impacts of climate change is our greatest challenge and outside the scope of the conference delegates mandate, there was general agreement that we can all play our part in keeping the mountains clean and encourage sustainable lifestyles for those who live in mountain regions.
The main topic of conversation was human waste. In some mountain environments the issue of that waste is profound, with piles of the stuff to deal with due to crowding and poor management practices. The upcoming challenge is to develop workable solutions in the aim to work towards better practices in mountain regions across the globe. You can listen to podcasts and read key interviews on the Sustainable Summits Blog.
