Adventure News 31 July 2015
Greenland’s highest mountain, Mt Gunnbjörn, is also the highest peak located north of the Arctic Circle. Therefore it does not just hold the title of being the highest peak in Greenland but is also the highest peak of the Arctic (3,694m). Located in the Watkins Mountains on the east coast, where massive mountains rise from the Greenland icecap, the conditions are pristine and in many ways similar to those in Antarctica. Mt Gunnbjörn is easily accessible via a ski-plane from Iceland and this expedition has the added advantage of a short week-long itinerary.
Mt Gunnbjörn Expedition Dates: May 30 - June 5, 2016

Adventure Consultants now offers five ship based expeditions to the Antarctic Peninsula each season. We cross the Drake Passage in a comfortable ship before our vessel becomes our Basecamp for daily activities such as snowshoeing, kayaking, camping, mountaineering, ski touring, hiking, photo workshops and landings ashore. There is something for everyone and this journey is an opportunity to discover Antarctica at a range of different activity levels.

The summer heatwave has affected the Alps with some routes being out of condition due to the extended period of hot temperatures, but the climbing has continued on alternate routes and peaks. We were pleased to see one recent group who were fundraising for their cause Project HALO continue on to climb Monte Rosa, the highest peak in Switzerland after they were unable to ascend Mont Blanc due to rockfall on the Gouter route. Read about their mountaineering trip with AC on their dedicated dispatch page.
Our Elbrus expedition in Russia is underway and the team are now acclimatising in the Elbrus valley, and getting ready for their climb to the summit, at 5,642m / 18,510 ft the highest peak in Europe. This year we are utilising the new Leaprus Hut for their on mountain accommodation and the team are led by Victor Saunders.

Our southern winter continues and with plentiful ice and a good snow pack, the conditions are fantastic for both ice climbing and backcountry skiing. Utilising our Basecamp at Wye Creek, we are now playing in this winter wonderland on the Ice Climbing and Ski Queenstown Backcountry Courses.
On our Ice Climbing Course, we take a helicopter directly from Queenstown airport into Wye Creek that is, without dispute, the best ice climbing area in the country. This base is also utilised by our Ski Queenstown Backcountry Courses, which is accessed on skis rather than by helicopter. Once you arrive at our Wye Creek Basecamp, you are surrounded by beautiful ice flows that drape over bluffs and cliffs, and for the skiers there are several valleys to explore.
Next up this winter we also have our Backcountry Skiing Courses, which are based in huts in the high alpine regions of Mt Cook or Westland National Parks. New this year is the inclusion of a Mountain Safety Council avalanche awareness certificate as part of the course.

The fundraiser held at the Federal Diner in Wanaka on July 21 to raise funds for The Himalayan Trust Nepal earthquake re-build appeal raised a whopping NZD$30,000 - a great result! This special evening was hosted by the fabulous owners and staff of the Federal Diner and included a 2 course dinner with accompanying wine, speeches by AC guides Lydia Bradey, Guy Cotter and Mike Roberts and a lively auction chaired by MC for the night, Calum McLeod, of donated items.
A second fundraiser organised by Cromwell College was held on July 24 at Golden Gate Lodge in Cromwell and raised over NZD$12,000.
