Newsletter July 2014
Winter is indeed upon us here in NZ and we are absolutely chuffed that it is now very cold! Are you all mad there at AC in Wanaka we hear you say? No! Winter is a gorgeous time of the year and to enjoy it to its fullest you need cold temperatures, ice and snow in order to ice climb and ski tour. Well we think so anyway. Read on for news of our trips and please do visit our NEW website.
NEW ADVENTURECONSULTANTS.COM WEBSITE !
Our new website is launched, we hope you enjoy the photos and ongoing dispatches and news from current expeditions that we are always posting. Please do click through to the site for a look around our new online home here.
The man who never stops, Victor Saunders, leads our motivated crew on Alpamayo this month and we have just had news in that the whole team topped out on July 20. Congratulations! Follow their trip here.
Our climbing trips on Elbrus in the Caucasus mountains of Russia are underway, and team one have just had a very successful summit day, with all on the team reaching the summit - congratulations! Expedition Leader Mike Roberts reports they all did really well and the photos on the dispatches prove that you can always look incredibly funny when learning to self arrest on the side of a volcano!
It's now or never for getting on to the ice in New Zealand in winter, and if you're ever going to be like Guy McKinnon and solo the East Face of Pope's Nose (congratulations Guy on your fine ascent!) then you need to start honing your skills on the steep ice. There's still time to book on for our remaining weeks of the Ice Climbing Courses until August 15, and then there's still the fun of the Remarkables Ice and Mixed Festival over the weekend of August 15 - 17. The Adventure Consultants Chicks n Picks programme is full but there are limited spaces on other festival programmes.
Many exciting climbing trips and instruction courses have been achieved already with our guides based in Chamonix, France and in Zermatt, Switzerland. We have room on some of the scheduled instruction courses which range from an excellent introduction to mountaineering weeks to more advanced courses to hone your skills with tutoring by our top guides. The Mont Blanc Course & Ascent programme is a super popular week in the Alps as is the Monte Rosa Course & Ascents week. July and August are nearly booked out and we have some space in September, do give us a call if you find you have time free this summer to climb in the Alps.
As August approaches so does the time for ski touring and backcountry riding on the beautiful high alpine glacier neve's of the Southern Alps. Our guided ski touring weeks starting August 4 are a mix of skills consolidation and generally high times exploring the alpine for the powder stashes waiting there. Yew! No crowds, awesome snow, beautiful vistas, a workout every day, scrumptious meals and good social times in the huts - book your winter highlight holiday today!
The Cho Oyu expedition to 8201m and back again is all set to launch at the end of next month. The AC team is full with a waiting list and guides Steve Moffat and Matty Chessor are training hard and getting very excited about meeting the team in Kathmandu on August 28. They will then travel to Lhasa before making the journey overland to the high plateau and the final two days trekking into Cho Oyu Basecamp, before commencing the climbing phase. We will be following them all the way with their dispatch page so keep an eye out for the start of the expedition to sign up for the emailed expedition alerts.
We have a fly in / walk out option for Carstensz and can even fly by helicopter both ways for small groups of climbers. The next expedition departure is in November which will be led by Mike Roberts.
Nepal enthusiast and IFMGA guide Tim Robertson is designated leader on this year's Adventure Consultants Ama Dablam expedition Oct 15 - Nov 11 along with AAI guide Andrew Yasso. There are 2 spaces left and this climb is perfect for you if you love exposure, hard but not too hard climbing and all round high altitude exciting times!
If you want to learn a thing or two about high altitude mountaineering then consider a climb of three 6000m peaks with Everest guide Mark Sedon. Mark is leading the Three Peaks climb that ascends through some of the most spectacular and beautiful villages in the Everest region of Nepal. This trip is popular with our climbers who are preparing for a climb of a higher objective in the Himalayas in order to log time and experience at high altitude on long summit days with alpine starts and also as a complete climbing expedition of a lifetime in itself.
Trek to the Highest Peak in Africa and help raise money for the NZ Mountain Film Festival Charitable Trust. The Festival has joined up with long time supporter, Adventure Consultants, to offer a charity trek to climb Mt Kilimanjaro with Festival Director and Himalayan guide, Mark Sedon. Click here to learn about Mark, the Film Festival and the Kilimanjaro trek.
The full 60 day journey from the edge of the Antarctic Continent to the South Pole is the epitome of going to extremes on our planet. Our Nov 19, 2014 - Jan 25, 2015 expedition has space available for qualified adventurers, and whilst this is one of the most logistically challenging expeditions to organise there is still time to join and complete enough training to make the journey a personal success. Costing US$65,500 this expedition represents the opportunity to make all your polar explorer dreams come true.
Some exciting festivals coming up that we are a part of, are:
Now is the time to make it all count and join the AC team on an expedition to an exciting destination this year - or at least follow our Facebook page for news of what's been happening in the mountains and at the Poles.
